Pictures cannot possibly recreate the magic of this beautiful meteor shower in the clear cold desert sky, but for a small taste, you can see one meteor on the far right side of the picture. We froze so you wouldn't have to.
The parent comet of this spectacular meteor shower is named Tempel-Tuttle and it makes an appearance in our skies every 33 years. The next really visible one won't be until about 2099. For those curious astrophotographers and gearheads who love to know, this was shot with a Nikon N70 on a forty dollar travel tripod in the middle of the desert, 2.8 aperture, exposure of approximately two minutes, 24 mm lens.
